In response to the video footage released of the violent arrest and subsequent death of Tyre Nichols, Safe Horizon CEO, Liz Roberts, issued the following statement:
“We are heartbroken to witness the heinous murder of Tyre Nichols at the hands of police officers. A simple traffic stop should not result in the murder of an unarmed individual literally running for his life. We have seen police brutality and profiling of Black men by law enforcement lead to murder over and over again, from George Floyd to Eric Garner, Philando Castille, Freddie Gray, Daunte Wright, and even our own client, David Felix. The trauma caused by these incidents takes a devastating toll on Black and brown communities across this country, and it has to stop.
We extend our deepest sympathies to Tyre Nichols’ family and community. And we urge our nation’s legislators to take action by passing the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act without delay. Finally, we call on police departments across this country to embrace the need for transformative change,” said Liz Roberts, CEO, Safe Horizon.
