We are deeply troubled by the allegations that New York State Attorney General Eric Schneiderman physically, sexually and emotionally abused several intimate partners in recent years.
At Safe Horizon, we respond to victims of violence and abuse each day who may not report these crimes to law enforcement for a variety of reasons. It takes tremendous courage to speak up about domestic violence in any case. When the alleged offender is a senior law enforcement official – and Schneiderman is alleged to have reminded his accusers that he was just such an official – the fear of reporting is understandably amplified.
Eric Schneiderman was supportive of the #MeToo movement and spoke out against violence against women. But we know that many people who are abusive in intimate relationships wear a very different face in public.
We say loudly to all victims – however and whenever they choose to disclose – that you are not alone and we are here for you.
