SAFE HORIZON RESPONDS TO GOVERNOR CUOMO’S SUPPORT OF THE CHILD VICTIMS ACT

January 12, 2017 (New York, NY) – Safe Horizon’s CEO, Ariel Zwang, made the following statement on Governor Cuomo’s announcing his support of the Child Victims Act.

We applaud Governor Cuomo for announcing his commitment to support the Child Victims Act. Under current law, most survivors of childhood sex abuse receive a devastating present on their 23rd birthday. Their ability to file charges on most forms of childhood sex abuse expires. We at Safe Horizon vigorously opposed this arbitrary time limit. Abusers should not be able to run out the clock and it’s time to change this archaic law.

The long-overdue legislation would reform New York’s overly rigid statute of limitation laws for survivors of childhood sexual abuse, and allow more time to bring criminal charges and file civil litigation against those responsible for the abuse. It would also open up a one-year retroactive window for survivors who under current law can no longer seek justice and bring forward cases. Safe Horizon is deeply grateful to the Governor for supporting survivors and standing up for justice.
