The criminal charges against former NFL player Ray Rice have been dropped after completing a pre-trial intervention program mandated by the state of New Jersey.
Unfortunately, in spite of the video evidence, even his suspension from the Ravens and the public’s justifiably strong reaction seem to have been stronger punishments than the courts in New Jersey were able to deliver.
The lenient court-ordered punishment sends a terrible message to abusers and victims alike: society still doesn’t take domestic violence seriously enough. If we ever want to end domestic violence we need real accountability for those who abuse their partners.
