Possible federal cuts could mean a loss of approximately $9.3 million to Safe Horizon.

The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) helps needy families achieve self-sufficiency. TANF is supported by Office of Family Assistance which is under an Office of the Administration for Children & Families. States receive block grants to design and operate programs that accomplish one of the purposes of the TANF program.

In New York State, TANF funds confidential domestic violence shelters for survivors and their children. Safe Horizon’s eight confidential domestic violence shelters provide safe, supportive environments for families and individuals leaving a dangerous situation. Shelters give survivors of abuse and their children the space to heal from the violence and trauma they’ve experienced.

In 2017, 764 survivors of domestic violence and their 1,111 children found safety at our domestic violence shelters.

Our shelter staff support our residents in rebuilding their lives through providing: safety planning, counseling and support groups, help building life skills, housing assistance, employment assistance, legal consultation, temporary child care, case management, and other practical assistance.

Proposed cuts to TANF could impact the well-being of domestic violence survivors like Olympia.

Olympia’s Story

Thanks to Safe Horizon, my children and I were able to save the little bit of pride that we have left. The shelter respectfully took care of us, which helped me to take care of them.” Read Olympia’s Story.
