Child Advocacy Centers
Safe Horizon's Child Advocacy Centers provide an essential community response to New York City's most vulnerable victims of violence and abuse, giving child victims the foundation they need to move from crisis to confidence.
With the opening of the Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center in 1996, our centers became the first in the country to bring together medical, law enforcement, legal, and social services representatives in a single, permanent, and child-friendly location to help abused children. Our Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center (now the Jane Barker Brooklyn Child Advocacy Center) is also a international model for the co-located, coordinated team approach to address child abuse and to help young victims, and handles the largest volume of cases anywhere in New York State.
Our Child Advocacy Centers, located in Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island, are among the busiest in the country, often serving as the first step that many child victims take toward recovery from abuse. Safe Horizon is the only organization in the nation that operates four co-located, nationally accredited Child Advocacy Centers in an urban setting. Our Child Advocacy Centers handle more than 4,000 cases of child abuse a year, giving thousands of child victims a path to safety and healing.
Child-Centered Approach to Addressing Child Abuse
Safe Horizon's Child Advocacy Centers use a therapeutic team approach to investigating, prosecuting, and treating the most severe cases of child abuse, With experts from both government and nonprofit agencies working together at each location, the Child Advocacy Centers provide the most effective and proven services to help physically and sexually abused children and their caregivers.
Our locations are child-friendly, welcoming environments where expert teams work to prevent further trauma in children after abuse, and to ensure that a coordinated investigation is begun immediately. Young victims, their siblings, and their caregivers receive comprehensive and on-site services from representatives of the following agencies:
- Safe Horizon's counselors and case managers
- District Attorneys' Offices in Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island, and Manhattan
- The New York City Law Department - Corporation Counsel
- The New York City Administration for Children's Services
- The New York City Police Department
- Medical providers and partnering hospitals
Team members from each agency provide a unique, collaborative, and evidence-based approach that helps children and families impacted by violence and abuse receive the critical and immediate direct support they need, and rebuild their bonds so they can heal and recover from crisis.
