Model Ambra Gutierrez was one of the first women to publicly accused Harvey Weinstein of sexual abuse in 2017.
“Being believed is something I wanted,” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez even secretly recorded Weinstein for the NYPD, but Weinstein was never arrested for her allegations. She called his rape and sex assault conviction this week a first step. Next, Gutierrez hopes New York State will pass the Adult Survivors Act.
The Adult Survivors Act would open a one year window for victims of sex crimes to sue their abusers, no matter how long ago the abuse took place.
“That will allow them to recover damages for pain and suffering and medical expenses,” explained Safe Horizon CEO Ariel Zwang.
“There’s an urgent need for it because many survivors have been locked out of court,” said the sponsor of the bill, State Senator Brad Hoylman.
Hoylman explained often sex abuse survivors do not come forward until years later, after the statute of limitations to sue has passed.
In an interview with PIX11 News, Holyman says he believes he has the support in Albany to get the Adult Survivors Act passed into law.
