At the end of 2016, Jana Kramer shared one of her deepest secrets with the world in hopes of making a difference for other girls who could be living in the same darkness. Kramer announced that she had been a victim of domestic violence in her first marriage. The episodes with her ex-husband escalated to the point where he was arrested for attempted murder. After he was imprisoned for several years and released, her ex committed suicide.
Kramer explained in a People exclusive in 2016:
He’d come home at 3 o’clock in the morning and pick me up out of bed, throw me onto the ground and start yelling and hitting. Then the next morning he’d be like, “Hey, baby,” as if nothing had happened.
Now, Kramer has turned her tragedy into triumph, as she is using her experiences to educate others.
At last night’s Safe Horizon Champion Awards, Kramer was presented with the Voice of Empowerment Award for speaking up about how she was personally affected by domestic violence. A tearful Kramer accepted the honor and promised to be loudest voice in the organization’s battle to end the epidemic.
