Description:Summary: Domestic Violence Emergency Shelter programs at Safe Horizon offer a comprehensive range of services including counseling, advocacy, intervention, and support to meet the needs of victims and their families. The locations of the shelters are confidential.

The location of the shelter for this volunteer spot is on Staten Island.


Responsibilities:Essential Job Functions: The Volunteer Assistant to the Residential Specialist works in a residential facility for battered women and their children and assists the Residential Specialist with duties such as:

Helping to maintain a safe and secure facility;
Responding to requests from residents or staff;
Understanding and following emergency procedures, including fire procedures;
Sorting and organizing donations of food, clothing, etc;
Conducting room checks as needed;
Assisting with intake procedures as directed;
Distributing household supplies;
Keeping activity logs;
Assisting with bed utilization by helping with apartment preparation and cleaning;
Notifying Residential Specialist if clients have problems or if there is a need for
mediation between residents
Childcare;
Other related tasks as assigned

Qualifications:Qualifications:

Willingness to give time and energy to fulfill the goals of the shelter
Human relations skills necessary to communicate with children, staff and adult clients
Willingness to work in an environment where children and clients may be in distress
Ability to work both independently and as part of the team
Flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of tasks
Ability to work with a diverse staff and client population
Ability to establish rapport and enjoy play activities with children and adults of diverse ages and cultural backgrounds
Awareness of impact of victimization on families and children


High school diploma and two years experience working in residential facilities a plus but other relevant experience may also be acceptable. Bilingual ability and computer skills a plus.
