Description:The Brooklyn Family Court Program provides counseling and practical assistance to victims of crimes with an overall goal of promoting victim safety and reducing the impact of victimization. The program is comprised of several units and includes specialized services for victims of domestic violence, a reception center, a supervised visitation program and a court-based-children’s center. In addition, the program is a victim services provider in the new Integrated Domestic Violence Court (IDVC), which will opened in Brooklyn in late October. The IDVC is an innovative court model in which a domestic violence victim’s criminal court, family court, and matrimonial case are handled by one judge, thus allowing for fewer court appearances and a more informed, consistent judicial process for victims. Safe Horizon works in collaboration with the court, the District Attorney’s office, and other criminal justice and social service agencies to address comprehensively the needs of domestic violence victims.

Responsibilities:• Maintaining an active client caseload through the provision of crisis intervention, counseling, advocacy and practical assistance to victims of domestic violence, including relocation, referrals, and clinical assessment;
• Acting as liaison with criminal justice system and outside agencies;
• Collaborating with program’s other counseling units to provide comprehensive services to victims;
• Participation in meetings/trainings pertaining to the IDVC;
• Attending internal and external trainings and workshops;
• Maintaining case records and statistics as required by Safe Horizon guidelines;
• Submitting weekly, monthly, and quarterly statistical and program reports;
• Various other duties to be determine by supervisor.

Qualifications:Required:
• Understanding of the dynamics of domestic violence and other forms of victimization
• Experience working with survivors of domestic violence.
• Excellent communication and organizational skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team while also independently generating tasks.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related field of study or equivalent education and experience.

Desirable:
• Knowledge of the Family Court and criminal justice system is preferred.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) strongly preferred.
• Experience providing crisis intervention, knowledge of victimization issues and sensitivity to domestic violence, is necessary; knowledge of the criminal justice system preferred.
