Position:Children's Services Specialist
Type:EMP Employee
Reports To:Supervising Social Worker
The Children's Services Specialist position provides a structured, educational, day, evening and weekend support to children of adults involved in domestic violence shelter. Under the supervision of the Supervising Social Worker, the Children's Services Specialist is also responsible for the overall management of the Center when present in the facility. The ages of the children can range from infancy to 16 years of age. Guided by lesson plans and activities planned by the Children's Services Specialist, the Childcare Workers and Children's Services Specialist lead and facilitate supportive, educational activities with the children in their care.
Responsibilities:Essential Job Functions:
- Responsible for overall functioning of the childcare area;
- Work with children from infancy to 16 years of age in a supportive, educationally-oriented environment that serves children in a shelter setting;
- Maintain registry of all children in the care of the childcare area;
- Make referrals and connections to parents to take advantage of other Safe Horizon programs, other community-based organizations, programs, and entitlements;
- Ensure funder intake forms, registration forms, statistics, and other required forms are filled out accurately, thoroughly, and submitted on a timely basis;
- Improve literacy for school age children and language development for pre-school children by speaking with the children and by planning, administering, and overseeing children’s activities, including, but not limited to: stories, use of computer software, educational toys and games, arts and crafts, dance, and writing;
- Curriculum and lesson plan development within the framework of the monthly theme provided by
- Hours to include evenings and a weekend day to work with children after school;
- Provide snacks and provisions to children when needed in accordance with shelter's guideline and parent's request;

Secondary Job Functions:
- Maintain overall dacor and cleanliness of childcare areas;
- Develop and post flyers in the shelter to build awareness of the childcare program;
- Participation in the development of new components and/or activities with supervisor;
- Oversee ordering of supplies;
- Perform regular evacuation drills of the area during regular work hours as directed by the Director;
- Liaison with shelter staff and parents;
Qualifications:Knowledge and Skills:
Understanding of basics of child development for all levels from birth to age 16;
Understanding of curriculum development for multi-age groups;
Understanding of several methods of kind behavioral guidance and the ability to apply the appropriate method to the situation at hand;
Ability to relate to caregivers and children who are under stress;
Ability to work with difficult population which requires a high level of social skills, maturity, and confidence in addition to being nurturing and flexible, yet firm and in charge;
Ability to work cooperatively as a team member;
Ability to communicate effectively in English (speaking and writing);
Basic knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and the Internet.
Bi-lingual with Spanish preferred

BA highly preferred, with some class work in early childhood education;
Students working towards a Masters degree in Early Childhood Education, Social Work or Counseling encouraged to apply

3-5 years experience working with children and/or young adults in some capacity;
prefer at least two years as a classroom teacher or facilitator;

May require additional hours as needed to cover other shifts or provide additional staff support as needed. Routine hours include evenings to work with children after school and a weekend day;

Must be able to become certified in child/infant CPR and first aid;
Must be able to lift, hold, and carry children up to 40 pounds
Must be able to sit and crawl around on the floor for long periods of time to interact with children
Must meet all licensing and screening requirements, including fingerprinting and registration with the State Central Registry of Child Abuse and Maltreatment
