Safe Horizon's Counseling Center is a NYS-licensed mental health treatment facility. We work with all ages who have been traumatized by being a victim of crime or abuse.
A volunteer's role is fluid and varies according to the immediate needs of the program. Volunteers should expect to assist Safe Horizon staff in varying capacities.
The volunteer may be asked to perform a variety of administrative tasks. There may be an opportunity to greet and welcome clients and answer questions on a limited basis.
The volunteer may also perform the following• Perform reception and administrative tasks, including:• Data entry, photocopying and filing• Preparation of newsletters and/or other materials• Prepare mailings• Online research• Answer phones and intercom system as needed• Greet clients as they arrive and direct them to appropriate sign-in area – if needed• Develop a working knowledge of the center and the role of volunteers• Provide recommendations to improve the center’s volunteer usage
Additional Tasks (may include):
• • Update program resources• Watch children while caregivers are meeting with program staff• Perform other related tasks assigned by Safe Horizon staff members
• Willingness to give time, interest and energy to fulfill goals of the program• Willingness to work in an environment where clients may be in distress• Ability to work both independently and as part of the team• Flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of tasks• Strong interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with staff and clients• Ability to work with a diverse staff and client population• Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office
This is an unpaid, volunteer position.
We ask for a minimum of a 4 hour commitment per week for five - six months
