Domestic Violence Shelter programs offer a comprehensive range of services including counseling, advocacy, intervention and support to meet the needs of victims and their families. Volunteers work with staff to supervise and creatively engage children in educational activities.
Providing support for age-appropriate activities for children ages 6-14 Supervising children while the parents are receiving services or making appointments;. Observing children's behavior and reporting problems or needs to appropriate staff. Facilitating play groups for children Assisting with homework Other tasks as defined. Organize, clean, and sanitize toys and surfaces
Prior experience working with children - two years relevant experience Strong interpersonal skills Willingness to give time and energy to fulfill the goals of the shelter Human relations skills necessary to communicate with children, staff and adult clients Willingness to work in an environment where children and clients may be in distress Ability to work both independently and as part of the team Flexibility and willingness to work on a variety of tasks Ability to work with a diverse staff and client population Ability to establish rapport and enjoy play activities with children of diverse ages and cultural backgrounds Creative skills in developing activities for children Awareness of impact of victimization on families and children Bilingual ability is a plus. High school diploma required; child care certification a plus
