Safe Horizon, the nation’s leading not-for-profit victim assistance agency, is seeking an Immigration Law Advocate for its Immigration Law Project (“ILP”). Since 1988, ILP has provided free or low-cost legal services to low- and moderate- income immigrant victims of crime, torture, abuse and domestic violence. ILP, an accredited program of the Board of Immigration Appeals, has nationally recognized staff attorneys who specialize in all areas of immigration law including naturalization, asylum, permanent residency, deportation and removal, work authorization, and permission to reside in the United States


The Staff Attorney is responsible for providing legal representation to non-citizen clients, including a wide range of services and for conducting presentations and trainings to internal and external audiences including community based organizations and other service based providers on matters of immigration law. Further, the Staff Attorney will be required to represent program before the Immigration Services during district stakeholder meetings and to collaborate with other organizations on issue pertaining to ILP’s mission.  Expertise in the field of immigration law is essential to all aspects of the Staff Attorney’s duties.

  • Conducts in depth interviews with clients, compiles history and case investigations.
  • Drafts all legal documents and makes all court  appearances with clients.
  •  Prepares      witnesses and client for court appearances
  • Responsible for assisting clients with a holistic range of services, including advocacy on not-legal issues.
  • Exercises complete decision making authority over each client’s case.
  • Provides legal information, advocacy and referrals to clients.
  • Maintains clients’ case files and all internal data logs.
  • Maintains monthly statistical reports documenting case representation, provision of legal advocacy and referrals.
  • Conducts presentations and trainings to community based organizations and other service providers to promote the mission of      the agency.  
  • Contributes to the employment, supervision and oversight of support staff, volunteers and student interns.


  • Must be familiar with a wide range of immigration      law and the underlying social issues effecting survivors of domestic      violence, violent crime, torture, flight from persecution in other      countries, and those seeking basic family re-unification.
  • Must have prior experience in and/or thorough      knowledge of immigration and refugee issues, domestic violence and social      justice work preferred.
  • Must possess strong oral and written      communications skills, including the ability to convey legal concepts to      lay people.
  • The ability to write routine reports, court      documents, case notes, pleadings and correspondence in a clear, concise      and effective manner is essential.
  •  Must be      creative and have critical thinking skills. Problem-solving, prioritizing,      time management, team-building and organizational skills are also      essential.
  •  A      knowledge and understanding of immigration and refugee issues and      sensitivity to multicultural issues is essential. Trial advocacy training      and experience preferred.



  • Must have a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree from an accredited law school, be admitted to the Bar
  • 2 to 4 years of related experience.
  • New graduates who have completed an approved fellowship may be considered
  • Bi lingual oral and written skills strongly preferred. Other foreign language skills desired.
