This January is the 3rd Annual National Stalking Awareness Month. Last year, Safe Horizon CEO Gordon J. Campbell accepted a Proclamation from the New York City Council in recognition of this important designation. Below is a summary of his remarks:
Stalking is a serious and pervasive crime that affects over 1.4 million women and men in the U.S. Victims are forced to take drastic measures to protect themselves, such as relocating, changing addresses, changing their identities, and changing jobs. Significantly, 76% of the women who are killed by an intimate partner were stalked by that partner for an average of twelve months before the homicide.
Despite these staggering findings, there is still a widespread lack of information on the crime of stalking. A good number of people still think it is a “celebrity issue” or a completely abnormal event. We need to continue in our efforts to increase public awareness on this serious—and potentially deadly—crime. We are very much thankful to the Council. We accept this Proclamation with our commitment to continue in our educational efforts and prevention work.
