Mediation
We Can Help
Safe Horizon’s Mediation Program provides a collaborative way of resolving differences between individuals, groups, and organizations as an alternative to prolonged litigation or violence. In mediation, a impartial third party mediator guides people that are involved in a dispute through a series of problem-solving steps to help them diffuse their conflict, communicate more effectively and find their own solutions.
Who is Eligible?
Our services are free and confidential. Mediation offers assistance to address various issues, such as harassment, minor criminal complaints, noise complaints, family conflicts, arguments between youth, parent/teen conflicts, child custody and visitation, school concerns, and special education disagreements. We do not mediate cases involving domestic violence.
Why Consider Mediation?
Mediation has many benefits including:
- Satisfactory Outcomes - People are usually more satisfied with solutions that have been mutually agreed upon, instead of solutions that are imposed by a third party decision-maker.
- Improved Relationships - Many disputes occur in the context of relationships that will continue over future years. A mediated agreement that addresses all parties’ interests can often preserve a working relationship in ways that would not be possible in win/lose decision-making procedures. Mediation can also make the termination of a relationship more amicable.
- Personal Empowerment – People who negotiate their own settlements often feel more powerful than those who use surrogate advocates, such as lawyers, to represent them.
