Jesse's Story: Moving Past Domestic Violence
Like so many other young single parents, Jesse’s top priority was providing for her child. At five months old, David was a handful. But she soon realized that her plan to live with her mother until she could save up enough to move out on her own with David was unsafe—not only for herself, but also for her child.
Jesse’s mother had been physically and emotionally abusive for years, but Jesse had hoped David’s presence would temper her behavior. Unfortunately, after David’s birth the abuse only escalated further. Jesse knew she needed to make a change. But she didn’t have the financial resources to forge ahead on her own and desperately wanted David to have a roof over his head.
Worried for Jesse and David’s safety, a friend told Jesse about Safe Horizon’s services. After a particularly frightening episode, Jesse frantically called Safe Horizon’s 24-hour hotline for domestic violence victims. She shared her story with trained Safe Horizon staff, who referred her to one of Safe Horizon’s domestic violence shelters.
Removed from the cycle of abuse, Jesse and David began to flourish. With the help of a committed Safe Horizon case worker, Jesse pursued resources to begin the healing process. She found a therapist and a support group. Her case worker also encouraged her to further her education so that she would be able to achieve financial independence. Jesse enrolled in a computer technology training program, and free from the fear of violence, she was able to dedicate herself to her studies and earn great grades.
Instilled with a newfound confidence, Jesse went out of her way to support fellow victims of domestic violence. She prided herself on lending a helping hand to new residents who came into the shelter nervous about beginning a new chapter of their lives. She always reassured them and was willing to share her story of transition to help ease their worries.
Jesse’s hard work paid off when she passed her exam for certification as a computer technician. Her drive to succeed and ambition to gain economic independence resulted in a paid internship through her school’s program and opened doors to future employment opportunities.
Through her own effort and dedication, with support from Safe Horizon, Jesse was able to triumph. She continues to take great strides towards achieving her goal of creating a better life for herself and her son. Jesse is a true example of how Safe Horizon empowers victims move from crisis to confidence.
