Alice's Story: No Longer Living a Nightmare (Domestic Violence)
Alice’s life had become a living nightmare, one in which she endured regular physical and sexual abuse from her husband. One day, Alice’s husband locked her in their home and began punching and kicking her and then raped her repeatedly. Only when he stopped his violent attacks could Alice call the police, who quickly came and arrested her husband. The police gave Alice the Safe Horizon Hotline number. While the police arrested her husband, Alice was sent to the hospital for medical treatment.
Alice’s nightmare did not end with her husband's arrest. She found out that he was getting out of jail and feared that he would come home and retaliate against her for having him arrested. That’s when she called Safe Horizon.
Alice told us what she’d gone through and how frightened she was about what would happen next. She was desperate to find an escape from the violence in her life, yet she felt trapped. Alice told us she stayed with her husband because she had yet to receive her green card. Because of that she felt she had no other options to find help for herself and her two small children.
Our staff listened to Alice express her fears for herself and for her children. Then we moved to give Alice the support to give her the escape she needed. We referred Alice to our Immigration Law Project, which provides legal help to immigrant domestic violence victims and their families, and where she could talk to our staff about how to gain legal status and stability for her and her children. We also advised Alice about how to get financial assistance to cover her medical bills.
The most important step was to find a safe haven for Alice. Our staff found a shelter that had room for Alice and her children and could take them in that same afternoon. Safe Horizon arranged for her transportation, and Alice was able to take her children and leave their danger behind.
With your support, we are able to help people like Alice move on to a life free of violence and fear. You are helping us to make a real difference and change lives every day, so we thank you for your continuing support and encouragement.
