Senator Kirsten Gillibrand Calls on House Leaders to Reauthorize Violence Against Women Act

On Sunday, February 17, 2013, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Safe Horizon CEO Ariel Zwang, lawmakers and domestic violence survivors joined together for a press conference to demand House action on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). Last week the Senate passed a bipartisan bill reauthorizing the Act, and now advocates are urging the House of Representatives to do the same. Reauthorizing VAWA would protect victims of abuse across the country by helping to fund domestic violence programs like Safe Horizon, and toughen penalties for abusers.
"It is unimaginable that the proven tools to assist survivors could be subject to partisan politics," said Ariel Zwang. "We again thank Senator Gillibrand and her colleagues for showing such bold leadership in re-authorizing this bill, and we ask the House do the same - for our neighbors who deserve nothing less than a life free from violence."
