HBA Global and Safe Horizon present Positively Beautiful Award
Safe Horizon board member Linda Fairstein was awarded the fourth Annual HBA "Positively Beautiful" Award this week for her commitment to Safe Horizon and its mission to support survivors of crime and abuse in moving from crisis to confidence.
A former prosecutor and best-selling crime novelist, Fairstein has served on the Board of Directors for Safe Horizon for 12 years and is a longstanding champion for women and children who have been victims of violent crimes and abuse.
The Positively Beautiful Award, established by HBA Global, is an honor given annually to recognize a celebrity who uses their exposure and efforts to further a cause that promotes inner beauty and self-esteem building, creating a more beautiful world for others.
"The idea that Safe Horizon created is called a Child Advocacy Center. It's a very new philosophy and it puts under one roof the medical care, the prosecutor and social worker. Even the NYPD built us a little police station for special victims' units. The child goes to one place that is child friendly - all the services work together," explains Fairstein. "Ideally, the child is only interviewed one time with a medical exam done by the best pediatric trauma doctor in the city right there in the center. It's been a life altering experience," she adds.
Fairstein served in the office of the New York County District Attorney from 1972 until 2002, where she was Chief of the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit. In that position, she supervised the investigation and trial of Manhattan cases involving sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and homicides arising out of those crimes. Over the course of three decades, she revolutionized the prosecution of special victims' unit crimes, making sure that victims have the support they need and abusers are brought to justice.
"This award could not be presented to a more deserving person,” says Ariel Zwang, chief executive officer, Safe Horizon. “Linda’s leadership in the criminal justice field and her support for Safe Horizon’s services have helped make it possible for countless women and children to find hope and healing. I am truly delighted that Linda's tireless efforts and years of dedication to Safe Horizon will be recognized with HBA's Positively Beautiful Award."
Fairstein has worked tirelessly with Safe Horizon since its inception in 1978. "To me it's the most heart-warming place on the planet. The kids tend to be very resilient. We restore their dignity, their senses of humor and spirit, and help them move from crisis to confidence, which is the goal of Safe Horizon," Fairstein says.
For her trailblazing work on behalf of victims of violence, Linda Fairstein has received numerous awards including Columbia University's School of Medicine and School of Nursing Award for Excellence; the Anti-Violence Project "Courage" Award; Glamour Magazine's Women of the Year Award; the American Heart Association Women of Courage award, and scores of similar honors. She is releasing the fourteenth novel in her crime series, entitled Night Watch, on July 10th, 2012.
