Safe Horizon Applauds House Passage of Violence Against Women Act
Trafficking Victims Protection Act included as an amendment in today’s reauthorization
The House voted today to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, which will help protect tens of thousands of Americans from violence and abuse. Similar to the bill passed by the Senate last year, this measure includes specific protections for immigrant, LGBTQ and Native American populations. Additionally, the House amended VAWA to include the Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act (TVPRA), which is the United States' most important tool in the fight against human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
"Safe Horizon applauds the House for passing the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) today to expand protections for victims of violence and abuse,” said Ariel Zwang, CEO of Safe Horizon, the nation’s leading victim service agency, and the largest provider of domestic violence shelter beds in the U.S. “This sends a powerful message to victims throughout the entire country who are need of emergency shelter, case management, counseling and other essential services who can now access these programs without delay. And with the added Trafficking Victims Protection Act amendment, we are also better able to combat human trafficking at home and abroad.”
