OCTOBER 5, 2011 (New York, NY) - The New York City Council honored Safe Horizon for “its unwavering commitment and outstanding service to victims of domestic violence.”  Council Speaker Christine Quinn, joined by many of her colleagues, presented an official proclamation to Board Chair Steven Parrish, CEO Ariel Zwang, and senior staff from Safe Horizon at the October 5, 2011 Stated Council meeting near City Hall.

Safe Horizon's Domestic Violence program offers support ranging from 24-hour hotlines to emergency and long-term shelters for families affected by domestic violence and abuse. Safe Horizon's services also include court and community assistance and advocacy, as well as legal help and counseling.

In addition to our direct services, Safe Horizon is partnering with the City Council on the Speaker’s 4-Point Domestic Violence Initiative by providing training to Chambers of Commerce in all five boroughs on how to recognize employees who might be experiencing domestic violence, how to respond to their immediate safety needs, and how to refer them to appropriate services.

Safe Horizon also manages the City Council’s Domestic Violence Empowerment (DoVE) Initiative, which helps community-based organizations throughout the city provide culturally and linguistically appropriate services to victims of domestic violence in underserved communities.

The City Council proclamation notes that Safe Horizon “raises awareness of issues of violence and abuse – and their impact on the home, the workplace, and communities” and recognizes Safe Horizon for its “stellar service to the community."
