Martin D. Newman, Esq.
Safe Horizon is proud to honor Board Member Martin D. Newman for Champion 2012.
Mr. Newman attended the University of Michigan from 1956 to 1960 and received an AB degree in History summa cum laude and with high honors. Mr. Newman was admitted to the Phi Beta Kappa chapter of the University of Michigan. From 1960 to 1963, Mr. Newman attended Harvard Law School, graduating with a JD degree. Mr. Newman was admitted to practice in New York in 1963, the District of Columbia in 1966, and various other Federal Appellate Courts, including the United States Supreme Court. Upon graduation from Harvard Law School, Mr. Newman was a staff attorney in the Office of the General Counsel of the United States Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington, D.C.
In 1968, Mr. Newman returned to New York to practice with the law firm now known as Chadbourne & Parke, LLC. He left that firm in 1968 to become associated with the law firm most recently known as Wien & Malkin, LLP, becoming a partner in that firm in 1972. Mr. Newman withdrew from Wien & Malkin, LLP in 1996 and joined the law firm of Ballon, Stoll, Bader & Nadler, P.C. Mr. Newman left that firm to form Fromme Schwartz Newman & Cornicello, LLP. Principally as a result of 9/11, Fromme Schwartz Newman & Cornicello, LLP, whose offices were located in the Woolworth Building, was dissolved
Commencing in late 1997, Mr. Newman together with Nathan Halegua of Jonis Realty has also been engaged in the creation of real estate investments for group ownership. He is now the principal of a number of limited partnerships or limited liability companies which own and operate in excess of 750 apartments and 70 commercial establishments in Manhattan. Mr. Newman also serves as a consultant to the Kushner Companies, a multi-state real estate organization.
Commencing in junior high school, Mr. Newman has maintained an interest in working with community and charitable groups, which was greatly heightened by his long-standing association with Lawrence A. Wien. He joined the Board of Safe Horizon in 1993, and was instrumental in the creation of a sister group known as New Destiny Housing Corp. which engages in real estate development and other real estate activities for non-profit organizations. He is also a director and former Co-Chair of New Destiny.
Mr. Newman resides in Manhattan.
