15th Annual Champion Awards Chair Linda Fairstein
Safe Horizon Board Member
Safe Horizon is pleased to announce that board member and former prosecutor Linda Fairstein is the chair for our 15th Annual Champion Awards. Ms. Fairstein is also a bestselling novelist, and one of America’s foremost legal experts on crimes of violence against women and children.
From 1972 until 2002, she served in the office of the New York County District Attorney, where she was Chief of the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit. In that position, Ms. Fairstein supervised the investigation and trial of every Manhattan case involving sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse and homicides arising out of those crimes.
Fairstein is a graduate of Vassar College and the University of Virginia School of Law. In 1998, several of Fairstein's law school classmates established a scholarship fund in her honor at their alma mater. The Fairstein Public Service Scholarship supports law students interested in careers in the public sector.
Ms. Fairstein is the author of a series of popular crime novels featuring Manhattan prosecutor Alex Cooper. Final Jeopardy (1996), which was also a television movie, was followed by eleven other titles, all translated into more than a dozen languages and appearing on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, USA TODAY, and London Times bestseller lists. The twelfth book in the series, Hell Gate, was published in March 2010 by Dutton.
Fairstein is also the author of a non-fiction work titled Sexual Violence: Our War Against Rape, which was a New York Times “Notable Book of the Year” in 1994.
Ms. Fairstein is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers. She serves on non-profit boards including Safe Horizon, God's Love We Deliver, the Virginia Institute of Forensic Science and Medicine, and as a trustee of Vassar College. She is a legal commentator on the major networks and cable news shows.
